Appointment of new Vice-Chancellor
The University of Bristol announced today, Wednesday 21 June, that the Joint Committee of Council and Senate set up to select a new Vice-Chancellor has recommended the appointment of
Since 1998 Professor Thomas has been Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Biological Sciences at the University of Southampton where he has recently been appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Designate).
Married with two children, Professor Thomas is aged 47. He was a student at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne.
He was a Lecturer at the University of Sheffield and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. In 1991 he was appointed Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Southampton; in the same year he became a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Southampton University Hospitals Trust. In 1995 he became Head of the School of Medicine at the University of Southampton. He is also a member of Council and Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Professor Thomas has over 150 publications, with particular interest in the biology of endometriosis.
Professor Thomas, commenting on his appointment, said: 'I am delighted and honoured to have been chosen to succeed Sir John Kingman as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol. Under his leadership the University has continued its development as a leading national and international centre for teaching and research. There are many difficult challenges ahead particularly over funding, widening access, information technology, globalisation of higher education and collaborations with the Government. I look forward to working with the staff and students and the people and business community of Bristol to overcome these challenges and ensure the University increases its international reputation for excellence and innovation.'
